Urban Land Institute AtlantaULI Atlanta is a District Council of the Urban Land Institute. With over 1,000 members throughout the Metropolitan Atlanta area, ULI Atlanta is one of the largest District Councils of the Urban Land Institute. The Urban Land Institute is a nonprofit research and education group with a mission is to provide leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities.ULI Atlanta offers a diversity of programs and opportunities throughout the Atlanta metropolitan area with land use expertise, leadership and education. Habitat for HumanityIn 1976, Millard and Linda Fuller founded Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) after experimenting with housing ministries in Americus, Georgia and Zaire. HFHI is an ecumenical Christian agency dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and to making adequate affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. In the mid 1980’s, former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn took their first Habitat work trip and the popularity of this budding organization began to spread. Around the time of the Carters’ involvement, in 1983, a group of concerned and motivated individuals in Atlanta founded a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity. Atlanta Habitat is now one of the largest affordable single-family housing developers in the City, and is the second largest of 1,600 affiliates of Habitat for Humanity in the United States.Georgia Department of Housing & Community DevelopmentHUD’s mission is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all. HUD is working to strengthen the housing market to bolster the economy and protect consumers; meet the need for quality affordable rental homes; utilize housing as a platform for improving quality of life; build inclusive and sustainable communities free from discrimination; and transform the way HUD does business.HUD awards grants to organizations and groups for a variety of purposes. Working with local nonprofit organizations to invest in their communities through property rehabilitation and resell to first time home buyers and low to moderate income families. Georgia Association of Housing and Redevelopment AuthoritiesThe Georgia Association of Housing and Redevelopment Authorities (GAHRA) is 189 housing authorities strong. Members provide affordable housing for approximately 250,000 of Georgia’s low-income residents; of which more than one-fourth are elderly and handicapped. The GAHRA membership administers and manages more than 100,000 dwelling units ranging from single bedroom apartment to five-bedroom houses. Some member agencies in smaller communities may manage less than 20 dwelling units while larger agencies may assist their communities with 20,000 affordable housing units.A leader in the field of training and education for its membership, GAHRA provides over 1,500 individual training opportunities for its members each year. Over 3,000 Georgia citizens are employed by GAHRA agencies. Atlanta Development AuthorityThe Atlanta Development Authority (ADA) is the official economic development agency for the City of Atlanta. ADA represents in-town Atlanta, a population of 500,000, and growing. A research-based economic development organization, they focus on residential, business and investment growth in the city. ADA utilizes the full economic development finance toolbox, including bond finance, revolving loan funds, TIFs and tax credits.As an arm of city government, ADA is governed by a 9 member board of directors, chaired by the mayor of Atlanta. ADA’s core competency is real estate finance. ADA has 50 employees and partners with over 55 economic development partner organizations regularly. ADA has six divisions: Commerce and Entrepreneurship; Finance, Facilities and Asset Management; Housing Finance; Legal; Marketing and Public Relations; and Tax Allocation Districts. Georgia Department of Community AffairsThe Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) was created in 1977 to serve as an advocate for local governments. On July 1, 1996, the Governor and General Assembly merged the Georgia Housing and Finance Authority (GHFA) with the Department of Community Affairs. Today, DCA operates a host of state and federal grant programs; serves as the state's lead agency in housing finance and development; promulgates building codes to be adopted by local governments; provides comprehensive planning, technical and research assistance to local governments; and serves as the lead agency for the state's solid waste reduction efforts. DCA provides a variety of community and development program incentives designed to foster affordable new housing development, homeownership, and improved housing choices throughout Georgia. |
